Carta di Soggiorno

Great news! My sweet Gary, aka the Stoic One, is no longer a "clandestino" or illegal alien in Italy. He has waited for his documentation for over 6 months and now he finally has it.

Today he recieved his carta di soggiorno which gives him permission to live in Italy for 5 years without any other intereference from the Italian Bureaucracy or any other lower life forms. May all future obstacles  be banished from our lives.

I am so happy that he is now here permently with me.  I can't tell you.  We had the nicest celebration lunch at a little restaurant in the hills called Girasoli di Sant'Andrea. He had a wonderful steak and I had the best chicken dish I have had in Umbria.

Making it through the Italian bureaucracy is no small task. I am so proud of the two of us. We have hung tough together.  Hurray for us!

  1. Yes Susan, hooray for both of you. Congrats to Gary! I love the fact that you celebrate everything.....very Italian.

  2. Hi Melanie...there you are! Thank you for the congrats. It's a big deal to us because it means Gary can finally get on the health care system here and stop paying $1200 a month it costs to maintain our plan in the US! Hope you are having a great summer. Many festivals here to attend.

  4. Susan,

So happy for you both. I am one of those complete strangers who thoroughly enjoy reading about your adventures in Umbria. The internet is weird, isn't it? I don’t even remember how I found this blog, but I have now read each of your posts. It took me about 2 weeks and I am now addicted to it.

PS: I am not sure about posting information this private (the photo) on a public blog, though, but you do as you feel is safe.

  5. Hello Sabine. Thank you for coming out and greeting me. I am so happy you have enjoyed the blog. My life here is never dull, I can truly say that. Thank you about the photo on the blog. I did think about it, and checked that the information couldn't be misused. Susan

  6. congratulaions, my name is Jaana and I've been reading your blog for awhile now. Italy is on my list of possible retaimentcountries and I love to read other people's experiences. Enjoy your summer and your life together.Jaana

    1. Hi Jaana. Nice to hear from you. There are 3 other American couples in our circle who have chosen Italy for retirement. We all very much love the life style and try to minimize our contact with Italian bureaucracy! Thank you for your good wishes.

  7. Wonderful news. I have been enjoying your blogs and following you through your experiences. I can't wait for my life to be packed up and my final trip to retire in Umbria. I still have a couple of years to go but I am following all your recommendations . Hopefully we will pass paths in Umbria and meet. We are looking around Pieve and Castigilione del lago.

  8. Hi Mary Ann. Nice to hear from you. The Pieve and Castiglione del lago area is very charming.I would love to see you the next time you come over. Maybe we can go for coffee?
